That’s what the University of Utah/Utah Transit Authority; the United States did with its open innovation contest named Next Stop Design. The objective was to work with neighborhood residents and design an improved and better functioning bus stop. The purpose was also to evaluate the feasibility of an OI approach for transit concerns and to understand how the people would contribute in urban planning and government decision making. The visitors and online browsers of Next Stop Design website were encouraged to submit their ideas keeping in mind aspects such as weather protection, accessibility and access to transit information. There were more than 260 ideas that were submitted and approximately 11,000 votes helped in choosing the winner.

The library came up with Australian Historic Newspapers that encouraged the public to enhance, correct the electronically translated text of old newspapers. This service was made available on August 2008, and by March 2010 more than 12 million lines of the text have been enhanced by the public. This has been the first library project globally through crowdsourcing that helped libraries and archives enhance the digital resources.

Open Innovation In Entertainment & Music Industry


When it comes to science fiction, Star Wars still remains one of its kinds. It was in 2009 that Starwarsuncut.com, United States resorted to crowdsourcing and requested all Star Wars fans to contribute homemade scenes. This was meant to be included as a crowdsourced version of the 1977 classic ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope’. The contest had specific instructions that were to be followed by the participant. The original film was segmented into 15 second chunks inviting the participants to select any clip they want to and re-film it and submit it within 30 days. Star War fans, aspiring film students and other interested participants submitted several versions of each scene. The film was finally available on internet in August 2010 and even won Emmy for Outstanding Creative Achievement in Interactive Media.

Thus we see that the power of innovation does not reside within a seminar room or amidst a chosen group of employees.
